The PEDIGREE of
Ahab (10th King) of ISRAEL

aka Achab ('Ach'ab) ben OMRY; (defeated Shalmaneser III of Assyria, q.v., at Battle of Karkar in 853 BC)

Note: King Ahab is one of the earliest Hebrews with clear historic sources outside the Bible. A monument to Shalmaneser III of Assyria, q.v., describes a battle in which Assyria was defeated in 853 BC by an allied force led by Ahab and a vast Israeli Army; Ahab delayed the advance of the Assyrian Empire by 12 years. In a separate campaign against Syria, Ahab showed mercy and spared King Ben Hadad. Records from Moab show that they were subjugated under Ahab (this is alluded to in 2 Kings 3:4). There is archaeological evidence, including remnants of an ivory palace, of major construction by Ahab and his father.
For these and other deeds, one might expect Ahab to be one of the major heroes of the Old Testament. Instead the deeds are unmentioned (except for the act of mercy -- for that God punishes Ahab!).     Why?     ... Because Ahab and his father worshipped Baal: Only worshippers of Yahweh get 'good press' in the Old Testament.

Note: The scripture writers assume other history books will serve to tell Ahab's story:
"... the dogs licked up his blood ... But the rest of the acts of Achab, and all that he did, and the house of ivory that he made, and all the cities that he built, are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?"      -- 1 Kings 22:38-39
